Our approach
We want your community to be a place where everyone can feel safe, as all people have the right to live as they wish – as long as this doesn’t impact those living around them. Usually, a calm conversation can quickly resolve a neighbourhood issue, but we’re here to support if needed.
It can sometimes be difficult for us to act without evidence, so keeping a diary with times and dates could be helpful. Reporting each incident to us separately is another way to help us build a picture of what is happening. Whether you’re a resident or not, we’d like to hear from you if you have been affected by any of the issues listed below.
Is it anti-social behaviour or a neighbourhood issue?
Yes
ASB includes violence, threats, racial harassment, drug activity, domestic violence, sexual harassment. It usually happens over a sustained period of time rather than being a one-off incident.
- Drug or alcohol-related nuisance, including illegal use of properties
- Using animals in a threatening way
- Actual or threatened violence or physical abuse
- Sniffing volatile substances, discarding needles/drug paraphenalia
- Indecent or offensive gestures
- Verbal abuse, intimidation, threatening behaviour or loitering
- Stalking, harassment, and hate crime
- Shouting and swearing, fighting, drunken behaviour, hooliganism or loutish behaviour
- Neighbourhood nuisance, including garden problems, littering and fly-tipping
- Joyriding, reckless driving, and abandoned cars
Probably not
Regular day-to-day living activities or behaviour related to divergent lifestyles are not treated as anti-social behaviour.
- Children playing in the street and ball games
- Cooking or household smells
- Babies crying
- DIY carried out during reasonable hours
- Smoking a normal cigarette outside
- One-off party
- BBQs
- Other vehicles preventing you from parking outside your home
- Trampolines
- Bonfires
- Cat nuisance
- Inconsiderate parking/parking on Highways
- Comments on social media (unless hate related or harassment)
- People ‘staring’ at each other/gossiping
- Youths congregating
- Overgrown gardens
Anti-social behaviour is defined as ‘behaviour by a person which causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to persons not of the same household as the person’ (Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 and Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011).
